State and Local Public Policies in the United States is an ongoing research project and data compendium. On this website you can download spreadsheets containing data on policies covering everything from taxes and government spending to abortion to campaign finance, more than 300 different policies in all, for all 50 states. We also provide information on how to use these data to construct indices of policy ideology or individual freedom. The data are now available as of year-end 2000, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014 (some annually, and some back to the 1930s), allowing researchers to begin to analyze the determinants of policy change across the states on a wide range of variables.
We have corrected the Oregon 2014 illegal immigrant driver’s license policy (see Data), which was repealed by ballot initiative in November 2014. We have also added links to the just-released 2016 edition of Freedom in the 50 States. We also have added some new publications.
All the state and local public policies have now been updated to year-end 2014. There is now a biennial time series from 2006 to 2014, plus 2000, for nearly all of our hundreds of policy variables.
